SSL Free For All

In case you have missed it (this isn’t very recent news), valid SSL certificates for your websites are now 100% free, thanks for the amazing group at Let’s Encrypt. As stated on their website, “Let’s Encrypt is a free, automated, and open certificate authority brought to you by the non-profit Internet Security Research Group (ISRG).” Let’s Encrypt remains free thanks to an incredible backing by a plethora of notable sponsors and donors. Their homepage shows 30 or so organizations including Mozilla, Cisco, Facebook, Digital Ocean, and Git Hub just to name a few.

With this new free and automated option, you are now able to create the free SSL certificates through several different channels. There are command line tools, websites that are built on top of the Let’s Encrypt platform, as well as tools built directly into the control panels of some hosting providers. As of this article, Let’s Encrypt is issuing upwards of 500k SSL certificates per day. This is truly one of my favorite examples of collaboration towards an important goal.
