I keep seeing the “software and cathedrals” quip attributed to anonymous.
I first heard this in a keynote that Grady Booch delivered to a Software Development East (Washington DC) in the nineties. It was during a talk about software architecture.
My recollection is that he drew the parallel between “writing software” and “building cathedrals” while standing in front of a slide image of Chartres. He added that for both cases the “architect” often died (or left) before the work was finished.
If you’ve ever heard him speak (http://www.redmonk.com/cote/2008/06/09/grady-booch-on-multi-core-uml-dsls-at-rsdc-2008/) you know he’s clever enough to have made this remark this first. He gets my vote anyway.

great list, personally i like the sentence “Software and cathedrals are much the same – first we build them, then we pray.”, as a programmer, i do pray sometimes after implementation, LOL.
